Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The greatest proportion of the wave of Italian immigration to the United States came from the "Mezzogiorno", with by far the largest numbers from Sicily. Thus, in many cases the speech, customs, and culinary delights considered by Americans to be "Italian" were actually Sicilian.
